Biology Department

Biological scientists study all aspects of living organisms and the relationships of animals and plants to their environment. The broad category of "biologist" is further classified by the type of organism studied or by the specific activities performed (e.g.,anatomy, botany, embryology, microbiology, pharmacology, physiology, or zoology).

A bachelor's degree with a major in biology is the minimum educational requirement for many beginning jobs in this field, and the UCBA Pre-Biology program provides the first two years toward completion of bachelor's degree requirements. The program is designed so that students can earn an Associate of Arts degree and transfer into the third year of the Bachelor of Science program at the University of Cincinnati McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, provided that all other admission requirements of that college are met.

Career Opportunities

A bachelor's degree in biology is adequate preparation for some beginning positions, but opportunities are limited for those who hold no higher degree. New graduates can start careers in testing and inspecting, or as biology technicians, or medical laboratory technologists. Many enter medical, dental, veterinary, or other health professional schools.

While a master's degree is sufficient for some jobs in applied research, a PhD is generally required for college teaching, independent research, and for advancement to administrative research and management positions.
