In this edition of the Five Facts:

  • A special visit by a UC VIP;
  • Honoring some of our super staff members;
  • And learn how our students are helping a local organization support families in need.

Visiting Trustee.

Wym Portman and Dean Lightner.

Thank you to William (Wym) Portman III, Vice Chair of the UC Board of Trustees, for visiting our college this week. It was a great opportunity for Mr. Portman to learn more about our college, the Muntz renovation project and some of the current needs we have in supporting our students, updating our campus and continuing our progress. He toured the Muntz renovation project (including the parts that are still in desperate need of renovation) and met with student ambassadors, as well as members of the UCBA Administrative Team.

Kudos to Brenda Refaei, a professor in our English/Communication Dept., for being recognized with the Celebration of Teaching Award from the Greater Cincinnati Collegiate Connection (GC3). The award was recently presented to Brenda at the GC3 31st Annual Celebration of Teaching luncheon at Northern Kentucky University. She was honored in recognition for earning the 2018 UC Blue Ash College Distinguished Teaching Award. Brenda was joined at the GC3 luncheon by Tracy Herrmann, Interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.

Super Staff.

Congratulations to all of the UCBA staff members who were nominated by colleagues and supervisors for the Provost’s Staff Excellence Award. They will be recognized in a ceremony downtown tomorrow (December 6). It’s awesome to see so many of our team members on this list. Word continues to spread at UC Uptown and across Greater Cincinnati about what a special place UCBA is, with such a spirit of cooperation and devotion to students. Read more here.

Spreading Cheer to Those in Need.

A shout out to students in our Bachelor of Technical and Applied Studies (BTAS) Club for leading a service learning project that will benefit countless families in need this holiday season. As part of their ethical leadership course, the group collected more than 1,800 paper products and personal hygiene items for Operation Give Back (OGB), a non-profit organization in Blue Ash that provides a variety of services for at-risk children and underserved families. If you are interested in helping OGB, you can learn more here.

Special Care for Very Special Dogs.

Dog at canine clinic

He doesn’t always wear a hat, but this guy serves with Cincinnati Police and was among the dogs at the Canine Corps event.

There were a lot of amazing dogs on our campus over the weekend as the Cincinnati Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) hosted the 25th Annual Canine Corps Health Clinic in our Veterinary Technology building. The annual event provides health check-ups for approximately 75 service dogs from agencies across Greater Cincinnati. Students, faculty and staff from our Vet Tech program volunteered for the clinic. The exams include checks on each dog’s hearing, vision, teeth, skin and heart health. The care is free thanks to the generosity of the volunteers and the support of IDEXX Laboratories, which donates all of the lab services. Read the story by WVXU here.

Quote of the Week

“The human brain is amazing. It functions 24 hours a day from the we were born, and only stops when we take a final exam.”

Good luck on your final exams!
