Weathering the Storm and Surviving the Shark Tank

After spending a morning watching one of his kids’ youth soccer games through wind, cold and rain, Rick Pescovitz saw the need for a temporary shelter that was easy to carry and set up. He used his experience in the textile industry to design an innovative new product and partnered with his wife, Kelly Mahan, to create a new company, Under the Weather.

The product is the SportsPod, a weather-resistant personal tent that holds a camping chair and is designed to allow viewing from all angles. It is being sold around the world and has been featured on a variety of national programs and TV shows, including ABC’s Shark Tank, NBC’s Today Show, and the Hallmark Channel’s Home and Family show.

Pescovitz and Mahan will talk about their experiences in creating the new company during the next edition of the UC Blue Ash College Entrepreneur Speak Series on Wednesday, November 7 from 7:00–8:00 p.m. in Muntz Auditorium on the UC Blue Ash campus. The event is free and open to the public.

“Under the Weather is the perfect example of finding a real need in the market and then capitalizing with smart and efficient execution,” says Kent Lutz, creator/host of the Entrepreneur Speaker Series and business professor at UC Blue Ash. “Rick and Kelly invested their life savings because they believed in their product and the company they were developing. They will have a lot of great information to share with current and future entrepreneurs.”

The event is an entertaining, interactive discussion. Lutz interviews the guests on stage about their experiences as entrepreneurs and some of the tips they would offer others. The audience also has the opportunity to ask questions.

The UC Blue Ash College Entrepreneur Speaker Series was developed in 2014 and features successful business leaders from the region sharing their experiences and advice for starting and growing a business. Past guests include Jeff Wyler, founder of the Wyler Automotive Group; Buddy LaRosa, founder of LaRosa’s Pizza; and Craig Kurz, owner of Honeybaked Ham.

The event is free but seating is limited. Register for the UC Blue Ash College Entrepreneur Speaker Series and see videos from past editions on our website. For more information regarding the November 7 event, call (513) 936-1632.
