The ‘Tooth Fairy’ Brings an Early Holiday Gift to UC Blue Ash

The ‘tooth fairy’ delivered a huge gift for the holidays and students in the dental hygiene program at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College are the primary recipients.

The college just received a $245,000 gift from an anonymous donor that will go toward new equipment in the Dental Hygiene Clinic and create scholarships for deserving dental hygiene students.  It is one of the largest gifts ever provided to the college.

“We are amazed and inspired by the enormous generosity of this donation,” says Cady Short-Thompson, dean of UC Blue Ash College. “I am genuinely grateful and thrilled about what this funding means for our students and faculty in our Dental Hygiene Department. This is a transformative, major gift that will impact us positively for many years to come.”

The Dental Hygiene Clinic at UC Blue Ash is the largest of its kind in Ohio.  It features 34 operatory units (each includes dental chair, equipment and supplies) that dental hygiene students use to treat patients and gain hands-on experience as part of their education. The units are more than 15 years old and have experienced significant wear and tear over time.

Along with $20,000 for new scholarships, the funding will go toward several upgrades that include new ergonomically correct dental chairs that will be more accessible and comfortable for patients. There will be new, state-of-the-art digital x-ray equipment with a 3D upgrade that improves the evaluation of the mouth with minimal radiation.  Students will also have access to new dental instruments and ultrasonic cleaners for use in the clinic.  All of the upgrades are designed to make sure the technology and equipment is similar to what you find in dentist offices across the region.

“These upgrades will definitely enhance the quality of education our students receive,” says Cyndee Stegeman, chair of the UC Blue Ash Dental Hygiene Department. “We already have outstanding faculty who are leaders at the state, national and international levels, now our students will be practicing on the most up-to-date equipment and instruments available.”

This is the second significant gift to the dental hygiene program by the anonymous donor, or ‘tooth fairy’ as they are referred to by college leaders. In 2013, the same person also donated $100,000 to upgrade the computers used in the Dental Hygiene Clinic to better match the technology and software now used by most dentist offices.

“We are so grateful for this generous donor who has made a lasting impact on the Dental Hygiene Clinic at UC Blue Ash,” adds UC Foundation President Rodney Grabowski.
