A Look Back on our UC Blue Ash College 50th Anniversary Celebrations

on

We’ve had a lot of fun celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College during the 2017-18 academic year. We have learned about the history of our college, recognized the impressive progress we have made over the past half-century, hosted a variety of special events, wrote a book, made a couple videos and partied all year!

As we wrap up the observation of our 50th Anniversary, we wanted to provide a brief recap of our various events and initiatives. Thank you for celebrating with us all year long.

Community Day at Summit Park

We kicked off our anniversary year in August 2017 at the new Summit Park in Blue Ash, right down the road from our college. UC Blue Ash Community Day was a way to celebrate our milestone with the community, as well as students, faculty, staff and alumni. Everyone was invited to meet the UC Bearcat, learn about the history of our college, and enjoy free snacks, activities and the beautiful weather.

The UC Blue Ash Website

We revamped our home page this year to highlight on our anniversary, with a special section right on the home page and extensive details on our history and 50th Anniversary events. Check out our 50th page here.

50th Anniversary Logo – Designed by Alumna Maria Huls

UCBA student (now alumna), Maria Huls, designed our official 50th Anniversary logo as part of a contest for students in the advanced graphic communication course taught by Professor Lisa Timman.  Maria’s logo was approved by the UC Brand Review Commitee and was included on posters, t-shirts, our website, etc. all over the school, all year long. Read Maria’s story here.

50th Birthday Party

On September 25, 2017 – the actual anniversary of our college – we threw a birthday party on the quad. We celebrated with pizza, birthday cake, a DJ, and a proclamation from the Mayor of Blue Ash.

50th Anniversary Gala

Possibly the most exciting night of our anniversary year was the night of our 50th Anniversary Gala. The gala was held right here on our campus as we welcomed many special guests including several of our distinguished alumni, UC President Neville Pinto, and the longest-tenured dean in our college’s history, Dr. Ernest Muntz! Read more, hear the speeches and view the gallery here!

Orbs light up the night at the 50th Anniversary Gala.

50th Anniversary T-shirt

All year long we have been selling our 50th Anniversary commemorative t-shirt for $10 each with all proceeds going towards the UC Blue Ash College Scholarship Fund. Hope you got the chance to purchase one.

50th Anniversary Taco at Tahona Kitchen + Bar

One of the new additions to Summit Park, Tahona Kitchen + Bar, participated in our 50th Anniversary celebration by creating the “UCBA Taco” as its featured taco during the week of September 18 – 24, which coincided with official opening of our college on September 25 back in 1967.  Restaurant owners, Scott and Erin Schmitt, also donated $250 to our college, representing a portion of the proceeds from the special taco.

UC Blue Ash Night at UC Football Game

On October 7, we represented UCBA at the UC Football game against the University of Central Florida. We received discounted tickets and were given a shoutout at halftime. We are UC!

Human 50 Photo

Using the new drone purchased by the eMedia department through a grant from the Duke Energy Foundation, we took a photo of a “Human 50” on our quad.

50th Anniversary Book

UCBA History professor, Robert Gioielli, wrote 50 Years of UC Blue Ash College: Inspiring Student Success- Then, Now, Always which continues to be on sale in the UCBA bookstore or online here.

UC Blue Ash Through the Years

After digging through our college’s archives, we created a historical, educational, and kind of fun video about the history of UCBA.

1967 vs. 2017: How Things Have (and Haven’t) Changed

I did some research and conducted a few interviews to see how college life has and hasn’t changed in the past 50 years to offer some perspective about what life was like for our original students in 1967. You can read the article here.

1967 Display by the Cincinnati Museum

The Cincinnati Museum Center brought us a display of memorabilia, photos and newspaper clippings from the year of 1967 for us to show off in our library throughout our spring semester.

50 Things we Love about UC Blue Ash Video

On Valentine’s Day, we released a video that featured our students, faculty and staff offering 50 reasons to love UC Blue Ash College. Watch it again (or for the first time).

Mother-Daughter 50 Year Milestone

Fifty years after Martha Ossenbeck-Smith was part of the original class at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College, her daughter, Shannon Chalmers, is a student in our Dental Hygiene program. Read their full story here.

50th Anniversary Alumni Panel

We hosted a panel of accomplished UCBA alumni from five different decades to discuss what life was like on our campus throughout the decades and offer tips about how they found their academic and professional success.

Social Media Contest

To round out the year we held a social media contest on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter asking students to post a selfie video wishing us a happy anniversary with the hashtag #UCBA50. The winner received a premium parking spot by the building of their choice.

50 Facts about UC Blue Ash

In August 2017 we began releasing a weekly fact about UC Blue Ash College on our blog, social media sites and TV’s around campus. We’ve compiled all of the facts in our archive and shared a “50 Facts Final Exam” to test the knowledge of our students, faculty and staff.
