UC Blue Ash Student Puts Her ‘Mark’ on 50th Anniversary

The University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College is celebrating its 50th Anniversary during the 2017-18 academic year with a variety of events and activities. The theme for the anniversary is Inspiring Student Success. Then. Now. Always. A student from the college is playing an important role in the celebration by creating the official 50th anniversary logo for the college.

Maria Huls was among nearly 30 students in the advanced graphic communication course at UC Blue Ash who were given the assignment of creating concepts for the 50th anniversary logo as part of their branding and identity project earlier this year. The Colerain Township resident was surprised that she and her classmates were offered this opportunity. “But I think that was the point of turning this over to students,” says Huls, who graduated from the college this year. “UC Blue Ash is celebrating 50 years of inspiring student success. What better way to do that than to get students as involved as possible?”

The students were given general parameters for the logo and some background on what it should communicate. College leaders wanted a logo that celebrates the rich history of UC Blue Ash and communicates its bright future as the college welcomed a record freshman class this fall and expanded its campus with the new Progress Hall that opened over the summer.

“Our 50th Anniversary is not just about looking back, but also highlighting our current momentum and future plans for growth,” says Robin Lightner, interim dean of UC Blue Ash College. “I’m delighted that our talented students were involved in creating a really attractive design for our logo. It’s apt that their work will be the symbol for the pride we have in our 50 years of inspiring student success.”

The official 50th anniversary logo incorporates the years, 1967-2017, with swoops in the number 50 that have been part of the UC brand identity for years. It also features an arrow in the zero that communicates forward movement.

Huls says she appreciates the chance to work on the project and is still amazed to think that her design was selected. “I was in shock when I was told that it was chosen. It was an extremely proud moment for me because it validated my career choice and my skills as a designer.”

Huls plans to continue her education and pursue her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. She knows that the foundation she developed at UC Blue Ash and the work she did on the 50th Anniversary logo will continue to help her reach her goals. “I learned so much from working this project that I can apply to future professional positions. I have so much confidence in where I will go from here.”
