New Grant Helps UC Blue Ash Cultivate Future STEM Students

on

A new grant from The Duke Energy Foundation will help the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College inspire area school children to consider a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM).

The Stepladder to STEM Education grant provides $9,500 to build on a collaboration between UC Blue Ash and Sycamore Community Schools that offers kids in grades K-6 the chance to explore the wonders of biology, chemistry, health care and more.

UC Blue Ash and Sycamore Schools are partners in STEM-related programs that bring elementary school students to the college campus each year to learn more about subjects such as biology, chemistry and radiologic technology.

“We are so appreciative that our partners at UC Blue Ash collaborated with Sycamore Community Schools to develop this grant in the interest of our students,” says Frank Forsthoefel, superintendent of Sycamore Community Schools. “We are always seeking opportunities to engage our kids in learning opportunities that are relevant, spark their interests and prepare them for college and career readiness.”

UC Blue Ash and Sycamore Schools are already partners in STEM-related programs that bring elementary school students to the college campus each year to learn more about subjects such as biology, chemistry and radiologic technology.  Kids get to conduct safe chemistry experiments with dry ice; learn more about cells, tissues and organs; and gain a better understanding of all the different bones that make up the human body.

The Duke Energy grant will support the continuation of those programs and add new areas of study, including nutrition and nursing. The UC Blue Ash nursing program will host a ‘First Aid for Second Graders’ program in 2016, where children will rehearse age-appropriate emergency scenarios and assemble their own first-aid kit.

“We are proud to partner with UC Blue Ash to help students experience and explore a variety of STEM topics,” said Warren Walker, Duke Energy manager of government and community relations. “These kids are our future.  We must do what we can to give them opportunities to learn new topics, and discover who they are and who they want to become.”

Thanks to the generous funding from Duke Energy, children from nearly every grade level in K-6 will have the opportunity to participate in a different aspect of the Stepladder to STEM Education program.
