A group of Norwood High School students are among the first to go to college through the new GEAR UP Norwood program. A total of 14 seniors from the school signed their letter of intent to attend UC Blue Ash College as part of the recent College Signing Day Celebration at Norwood High School.
GEAR UP Norwood was established this past fall thanks to the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant. The funding, which includes more than $1 million for scholarships over the next seven years, is through the U.S. Department of Education.
The program is coordinated through a collaboration between Norwood City Schools, UC Blue Ash and the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative. The primary goals for GEAR UP are to help low-income and first-generation college students prepare for college and receive the support needed once they get there to achieve success and earn their degree.
