eMedia Students Make it Seven in a Row

July 2, 2014 – For the seventh consecutive year, the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) is recognizing students from Electronic Media Communications at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College. This year, two projects are being honored with the coveted Student Production Award and three others received Honorable Mention Awards.

The students will be recognized at the 50th Annual Ohio Valley Regional Emmy Awards Gala on August 2, 2014 in Columbus, Ohio. Accompanying the student producers to the ceremony are their faculty advisors William Boyle, David Hartz, Dave Hubble and H. Michael Sanders.

Each project represents professional levels of accomplishment in the areas of photography and lighting, graphics and animation, technical execution, writing and direction. The eMedia students and their faculty advisors are being recognized from a field of 40 college/university entries from across the 4-state region and their productions were judged and critiqued by industry professionals on behalf of the academy.

The Ohio Valley Chapter of NATAS honors the top student work in specific categories, just as they recognize professional work. The award–winning projects from UC Blue Ash are:

  • Catalyst by Jaerett Engeseth (producer/director/photographer) in the Photography category.
  • Animation Reel by Kyle Newton (producer/animator) in the Animation category.

In addition, UC Blue Ash students took home the following honorable mention awards:

  • Catalyst by Jaerett Engeseth in the Short Form-Fiction category and a second honorable mention to Jaerett in the Audio/Sound category.
  • Epic Bath by Keith Benson received an honorable mention in Animation.

Other student projects that were nominated included: A Game of War by Calvin Akred (writer/producer/director) and Heaven Spot by Kyle Newton (producer/director) both in the Special Visual Effects/Graphics category.

“These awards are certainly a form of validation for the students and faculty in our program,” says H. Michael Sanders, professor and department chair for the eMedia program at UC Blue Ash.  “We know that our students are producing high-quality work, but to receive that confirmation from such a prestigious organization really shows that our students are prepared for successful careers.”

The Ohio Valley Chapter of NATAS is one of twenty regional chapters in the United States. It includes television markets across Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia. The complete list of college award winners is available here.
