Photo Edward Bradel - Biology

Chairperson, Edward Bradel, PhD

Chairperson, Professor of Biology

Dr. Ed Bradel is a Professor at UC Blue Ash. He teaches Anatomy and Physiology, Introduction to Pharmacology, Genetics, and Sectional Anatomy. Professor Bradel also serves as academic unit head for the Biology Department and is the course coordinator for Anatomy and Physiology.

Dr. Bradel received his B.S. degree in Biology from Otterbein College. He also holds an M.S. in Anatomic Pathology and a Ph.D. in Medical Physiology from The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Research interests have included the ultrastructural analysis of pediatric malignancies and cellular/molecular processes involved in central nervous system myelination.

Professor Bradel is the proud father of Jared, a career naval aviation officer. In his spare time he is an avid woodworker and enthusiastic renovator of an older house.

Suzanne Bradshaw, PhD

Associate Professor of Biology

Dr. Suzanne Bradshaw is an Associate Professor of Biology at UC Blue Ash College. She teaches courses in biotechnology, molecular biology and cell biology.

Dr. Bradshaw has a BS in Biology from Duke University. She received her Ph.D. in molecular and cell biology from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship in molecular and developmental biology at Yale University Research interests have included regulation of gene expression and molecular controls of development.

Outside of the college, Dr. Bradshaw enjoys spending time with her daughter and husband, attending the ballet, reading and travel.

Amy Gultice, PhD

Assistant Professor of Biology

Dr. Amy Gultice is an Assistant Professor of Biology at UC Blue Ash. Dr. Gultice is currently teaching the Anatomy and Physiology series (I, II, and III), as well as Introduction to Pharmacology and Pharmacology for Dental Hygiene.

Dr. Gultice earned an undergraduate degree in English from Miami University and later in life, returned to school at Wright State University, earning a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences.  Her current research focuses on improving student retention and the development of interventions to help students succeed in introductory science courses.

Karen King, PhD

Professor of Biology

Dr. Karen King is a Professor of Biology at UC Blue Ash College.  Dr. King is currently teaching the Clinical Research course sequence and the Anatomy and Physiology course sequence. She utilizes both online and traditional delivery formats for her classes.

Dr. King is the coordinator of the Clinical Research Certificate Program where she coordinates the clinical research program and related courses and assists in clinical research for faculty. She is a frequent lecturer on clinical research education.

Dr. King received her B.A. in Biology from University of Missouri, Columbia and her Ph.D. in Biological Science from Florida State University. Her post-doctoral work was conducted at the National Institute of Environmental Health Science and at the University of Cincinnati.

Beverly Knauper, PhD

Professor of Biology

Dr. Beverly Knauper is Professor of Biology at the University of Cincinnati UC Blue Ash.  She teaches introductory biology courses for non-majors and allied health students.  Her professional interests include faculty development and the scholarship of teaching and learning. 

Dr. Knauper received a Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from The Ohio State University and a B.S. in Biology from Wilmington College (Ohio).

Louis Kutcher, PhD

Associate Professor of Biology

Dr. Louis William Kutcher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology.  Dr. Kutcher is currently teaching the Anatomy and Physiology sequence, Introduction to Pharmacology and the Biotechnology Seminar.  Dr. Kutcher is also the Academic Advisor for the Clinical Research - One Year Certificate and Clinical Research - Professional Certificate.

Dr. Kutcher received his Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry from Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana.  He then spent over 12 years working in research; first at a major medical school then with an international pharmaceutical company.  Leaving the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Kutcher went back to school and earned a doctorate from the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at the University of Cincinnati Medical School.  Dr, Kutcher maintains ties with researchers at the Univeristy of Cincinnati Medical School and is developing a research interest in the teaching of critical thinking skills in biology courses.

Bradford Mallory, PhD

Assistant Professor of Biology

Dr. Bradford Mallory is an Assistant Professor of Biology at UC Blue Ash. Dr. Mallory teaches the General Biology sequence (Biology 101 – 103), as well as courses for non biology majors.

Dr. Mallory received his B.S. in Biology from Tennessee State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cell and Molecular Biology graduate program (now Cell and Cancer Biology).

Dr. Mallory is the advisor of the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society and the UC Black Graduate Student Association. He is also an academic advisor for the Liberal Arts degree program here at UC Blue Ash. His professional interests include addressing issues of student success in college and graduate school, and improving students’ confidence in their ability to understand and utilize biology in their everyday lives.

Amy Miller, PhD

Assistant Professor of Biology

Dr. Amy Miller is an Assistant Professor at UC Blue Ash. Dr. Miller teaches Microbiology and introductory biology courses for non-majors.  

Dr. Miller received her B.S. in Microbiology from Louisiana State University and her Ph.D. in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell Sciences at the University of Memphis.  

Currently, Dr. Miller engages in the scholarship of teaching and learning with a focus on methods that encourage active student involvement. She is a member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and has presented her classroom research at the ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators.  

When Dr. Miller isn’t teaching about the joys of microbes, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, reading, and watching college baseball and football.

Patrick Owen, PhD

Assistant Professor of Biology

Dr.  Patrick Owen is an Assistant Professor of Biology at UC Blue Ash. He is currently teaching the Biology 101-103 course sequence, teaches courses in introductory environmental science and data analysis. 

Dr. Owen is a herpetologist.  He studies animal behavior and physiological ecology, particularly vocalizations and aggressive behavior in frogs.  Undergraduate students are welcome to collaborate in this research.  Dr. Owen has presented his work at the annual Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, and he serves as secretary for the Herpetologists’ League, a scientific organization devoted to the study of amphibians and reptiles.

Dr. Owen received a PhD in Ecology from the University of Connecticut and a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Butler University in Indianapolis.

Bradley Sarchet, PhD

Assistant Professor of Biology

Dr. Sarchet is an Assistant Professor starting in Fall 2011, he served the department as a Visiting Assistant Professor for the academic year 2010-2011.  Dr. Sarchet will be teaching primarily in the Human Anatomy & Physiology sequence. In previous positions he has taught courses ranging from Ethics and Logic to Microbiology and Comparative Animal Physiology.

Dr. Sarchet has a B.S. in Biology from Bowling Green State University, and an M.A. in Philosophy and Ph.D. in Zoology/Physiology from the University of Wyoming.   His doctoral research combined philosophy and science in analyzing uncertainty in environmental toxicology and EPA decision-making.

His scientific research interests are in aquatic toxicology and amphibian physiology, and on the more philosophical side he is interested in the concepts of proof, verification and truth, and the history of science, medicine and disease.

M.J. Weintraub, DVM

Educator - Associate Professor

Dr. MJ Weintraub is an Associate Professor - Educator at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College. Dr. Weintraub is currently teaching Microbiology, the Biology 101-103 course sequence and Destination Disease.  In the classroom, she is focused on identifying teaching methods to assist both college ready and non-college ready students.

Dr. Weintraub received her B.S. degree in Biology from Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois Veterinary School.  She primarily practiced Emergency Small Animal Medicine and then began a new career teaching college 7 years ago.

Dr. Weintraub is the proud mother of Sylvia and Daniel Weintraub.  She is a huge football fan. Cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes; the Cincinnati Bearcats; the Irish of Notre Dame & the Oberlin Yeoman!  She is also a fan of the Cincinnati Red's baseball team.

Keen Wilson, PhD

Assistant Professor of Biology

Dr.  Keen Wilson is an Assistant Professor of Biology at UC Blue Ash. He is currently teaching Fundamentals of Biology I, and will teach courses in genetics starting in Winter 2011. 

Dr. Wilson received his PhD in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and a B.A. in Secondary Science Education/Biology from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. His post-doctoral research was conducted at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, and he spent several years as an assistant laboratory director at an area human genetic identity laboratory before coming to UC Blue Ash.

Dr. Wilson is interested in the evolution of development and animal body plans.  He has studied the evolution of early developmental mode in the sea urchins Heliocidaris tuberculata and Heliocidaris erythrogramma, as well as the evolution of organ development in mice and sea lamprey.  Undergraduate students are welcome to inquire about collaboration in this research.  Dr. Wilson has presented his work at a number of national and international meetings, including the International Symposium on Human Identification and the Evolution meeting.

Ann Witham, DVM

Assistant Professor of Biology

Dr. Ann Witham is an Assistant Professor of Biology at UC Blue Ash.  Dr. Witham is currently teaching the Fundamentals of Biology course sequence.  She also teaches Introduction to Pharmacology in an online format.

Dr. Witham received her B.A. in Biology from the University of Louisville and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Ohio State University.  She practiced small animal medicine for 21 years before she began her college teaching career.   

Dr. Witham is the advisor for the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.  Her professional interests include improving student retention and developing and improving online learning at UCBA.

 

 

 

Frank Wray Photo

Frank P. Wray, PhD

Professor of Biology

Dr. Frank Wray is a Professor of Biology at the UC Blue Ash of the University of Cincinnati.  Dr. Wray teaches both majors and non-majors courses including; Biology in a Human Context, Biology 104, 105, and 106 (both face-to-face and online), Environmental Science, Majors Biology, and Ecology.

Dr. Wray’s research interests involve environmental sustainable development and students' and faculty attitudes towards distance learning courses.

Dr. Wray received his B.A. in Biology from Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska, his M.A. in Zoology from Eastern Illinois University and his Ph.D. in Systematics and Ecology from the University of Kansas.

Outside of teaching Dr. Wray enjoys traveling with his family, latin dancing, staying fit, exploring new foods and cooking.

Kristine Hickey, PhD

Rep. Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biology

Dr. Hickey is a Represented Adjunct Assistant Professor at UC Blue Ash.  Dr. Hickey currently teaches Anatomy & Physiology I, II and III lectures and labs, and Clinical Outcomes Measurements.

Dr. Hickey received her bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Edgecliff College in Cincinnati (now part of Xavier University), and continued her undergraduate training with a clinical lab internship in medical technology at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Covington, KY.  Dr. Hickey earned a doctorate degree in Physiology and Cell Biophysics from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.  Her thesis research involved culturing endothelial cells and characterizing several cellular products: plasminogen activator in fibrinolysis, and the newly discovered vasoconstrictor endothelin.  After completing a year of medical school at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Hickey began her college teaching career, which has included part time and full time positions at various colleges while she raised her four children.  Dr. Hickey has a special interest in developmental disabilities as her youngest child has Down syndrome and autism.

Mark Otten, MS

Rep. Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biology

Professor Otten teaches the Biology sequence of courses (Biology 101, 102, and 103), Ecology (Biology 303) and occasionally a study abroad course titled Evolution: History and Processes (Biology-289).  He also serves as academic advisor for the Pre-Biology Program and coordinator for the Biology course sequence.

 Professor Otten received his A. A. degree in Pre-Forestry/Wildlife Management (1983) from Raymond Walters College, his B. S. degree in Wildlife Management (1987) from The Ohio State University, and his M. S. degree in Wildlife Ecology (1989) from Michigan State University.  From 1900 – 1999, Professor Otten worked as a research ecologist studying endangered species at the Naval Petroleum Reserves near Bakersfield, California.

 Professor Otten’s teaching interests include application of puzzles and games to learning, natural settings as a classroom environment, and the study abroad experience.  His research interests include the ecology of college campuses and the history of evolutionary thought

Susan Willis, MS

Rep. Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biology

Susan Willis is Represented Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at UC Blue Ash.  She has been teaching at UC Blue Ash since January 2001.

Professor Willis currently teaches the Fundamentals of Biology sequence (BIOL 126-128)
and currently serves as course coordinator for the sequence.  She also coordinates and
teaches the Environmental Science sequence (BIOL 144-146), both in a traditional
classroom setting and online.

Professor Willis obtained her M.S.in Biology from University of Cincinnati in 1999 with her specialty in Aquatic Ecology.  She received her B.A. in Biology and Certification in Secondary Education from Thomas More College 1990.  Her research interests include diatoms, aquatic ecology and classroom pedagogy.

Professor Willis lives with her husband and three children in Blue Ash.  She is a Group Exercise Instructor at the YMCA.  Her interests include reading novels, making crafts and golfing.

James Ross

Visiting Assistant Professor

Jim Ross is a Visiting assistant Professor of Biology at Blue Ash College as of September, 2011. Prior to this appointment, Jim was the Director of Academic Support Services at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, KY. Other professional experience includes appointments at the University of the Cumberlands (KY), Benedict College (SC), and the University of Hawai’i. Jim’s past positions include Professor of Biology, Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences (Cumberlands), and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs (Cumberlands).

Jim’s Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biology are from Murray State University, Murray, KY. His Ph.D. in Cell Biology is from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. His training and past research interests are in plant biochemistry, focusing on chloroplast membrane lipids and their role in some chloroplast functions.

Jim is currently teaching in the majors Biology sequence. Other interests include crazy fast cars (Shelby Cobra), classic cars (Ford Thunderbirds) and college football.

Rita Steyn

Visiting Instructor

Rita is a new Visiting Instructor of Biology as of September 2011.  She came to UC/Blue Ash as an Adjunct Instructor of Biology in January 2011 and has taught Fundamentals of Biology and Environmental Science courses. 

Rita earned her Masters degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Ohio University where her thesis was on evaluating reef conditions and the impacts of blast-fishing on the coral reefs surrounding the island of Balobaloang, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.  She also earned a B.S. in Marine Biology and a B.A. in Psychology from Ohio University. 

Before joing UC/UC Blue Ash, Rita taught Anatomy & Physiology, Coral Reef Biology and Marine Biology at Windward Community College and Kapiolani Community College in Hawaii.  Rita is happy to be in Cincinnati and loves learning more about our great city.

I am an Adjunct Instructor of Biology and teach Biology 281-Microbiology at UCBA. I have a B.S. in Microbiology from Pennsylvania State University and have a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I also performed postdoctoral research in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I had worked for 10 years at Dow AgroSciences in R&D to identify microbial genes and secondary metabolites for use in biotechnology and agricultural applications. For the past three years, I have worked at Proctor and Gamble in Beauty Care Microbiology where I am involved in product preservation and microbial risk assessment. My areas of focus are microbial isolation and characterization, molecular genetics, industrial microbiology, and biotechnology.

I have three children (ages 7, 18, and 21) and have been married to the same patient, forgiving woman for over 23 years. My claims to fame have included: throwing out the first pitch at a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game and having a role as a zombie in the movie classic, Day of the Dead.

Jeffrey Brown, PhD

Adjunct Instructor of Biology

Dr. Jeffrey Brown is an Adjunct Instructor of Biology at UC Blue Ash.  Dr. Brown is currently teaching the Fundamentals of Biology courses in the evenings.

Dr. Brown earned a B.S. in Biology from the University of Cincinnati, and a Ph.D. from Loyola University Chicago, Department of Microbiology & Immunolgy, for his thesis work on immune system development.  Dr. Brown did his postdoctoral fellowship at Children's Hospital Los Angeles studying immune deficiencies and gene therapy.  During the day, Dr. Brown works in the field of Clinical Trial Management.

Richard Converse

Adjunct Instructor of Biology

Richard Converse began his association with the University of Cincinnati in 1979 as an undergraduate enrolled at….UC Blue Ash! He completed both his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Cincinnati and currently holds an M.S. in Biological Sciences from UC.  Richard then began research in biodegradation in the Department of Molecular Genetics and has over 25 years of research experience as a Molecular Biologist.  During that time, Richard has studied plant genetics, biodegradation, muscle development, corneal disease, heart development, brain development, cancer, and, currently, the genetics of Herpes Simplex Virus latency. He has also worked in bacterial, mouse, and yeast systems during this period.

Richard's interests include: gene regulation, evolution, human development, molecular genetics, biochemistry, and, of course, teaching. Since 2004, he has instructed courses for the University of Cincinnati, the University of Phoenix, and Cincinnati State General and Technical College including Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Molecular Biology, and Health.

Richard says he really enjoys research, but his passion lies with teaching. "Knowledge is the tool that opens the world to us. My hope is that I can help spread a little knowledge around to open the world to as many of my students as possible, and that, in turn; they can let me learn from their experiences as well".

Kieran Daly, PhD

Adjunct Instructor of Biology

Dr. Kieran Daly is an Adjunct Instructor of Biology at the University of Cincinnati UC Blue Ash and Senior Research Associate in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine.

Dr. Daly received his B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Microbiology at the University College, Cork, Ireland and his M.Sc. in Microbiology at the same university. He received his Ph.D. in Immunology from the Department of Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Cincinnati. He has been active in research in various fields including Viral Immunology and Tumor Immunology and currently does clinical research on the AIDS-related disease Pneumocystis.

Dr. Daly is interested in the use of visual media to tell the stories of life and has been and still is excited by the work of David Attenborough and the BBC in bringing biology home.

Michael Hayes

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biology

Mike is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biology, and has been teaching at UC Blue Ash since 2002. He currently teaches Applied Anatomy & Physiology for Allied Health at UCBA, and the Paramedic Programs at UC Blue Ash, Clermont, and Northern Kentucky campuses. Mike also teaches a Gross Human Anatomy lab at the College of Medicine as part of the paramedic curriculum.

Mike earned his AAS and BS degrees from UC’s College of Applied Science, and his MEd. in 2000 from the College of Education at the University of Cincinnati. He is currently completing a degree in Pre-Medicine. Mike has been a firefighter and paramedic for 30 years, the past 18 years of which have been at CVG Airport Fire Dept. He is currently Battalion Chief over the Emergency Medical Services Division. Mike also serves on several advisory committees for pre-hospital medical standards of care.

Ellen Krumme

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biology

Dr. Ellen Krumme is a native of Cincinnati. She graduated from UC Blue Ash in June 1986 with an Associate in Dental Hygiene. In 1994 Dr. Krumme earned her Doctorate of Chiropractic from Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, MO. Recently Dr. Krumme just completed her BS in Life Science form Logan College. It has long been a goal to finish her BS degree and she has plans to start on a master’s in Education.

Dr. Krumme has taught at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College since 1998, Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science since 2003 and has been at UC Blue Ash since 2008. The classes she primarily teaches are related to human biology or anatomy and physiology.

Dr. Krumme lives in West Chester with her husband and three children. She has two dogs and two cats. She has a full time chiropractic practice in West Chester.

D.J. Lowrie, Jr., PhD

Adjunct Associate Professor of Biology

Dr. D. J. Lowrie Jr, is a Field Service Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Education in the College of Medicine, and has a part-time position as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at UC Blue Ash.  In the College of Medicine, Dr. Lowrie is the Course Director of Medical Histology and Cell Biology, Dissection of the Human Body, and Gross Anatomy: Prosection and Teaching.  He also teaches in the Year 1 Gross Anatomy and Brain and Behavior I courses.  Dr. Lowrie also teaches Clinical Embryology and Teratology; both of these graduate courses are offered live and online.  At UC Blue Ash, Dr. Lowrie teaches Anatomy and Physiology.

Dr. Lowrie received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Biology Department at the University of Dayton.  He then received his Ph.D. from the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy at the University of Cincinnati.  His major research interests include educational pedagogy, with a particular interest in implementing new technologies to increase student learning and teaching efficiency.

Rob O’Connor is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Clinical Certificate Program at UC Blue Ash. He has been teaching the Clinical Research course sequence (Regulations of Clinical Trials, Mechanisms of Clinical trials I, and Mechanisms of Clinical trials II) since 2008.

Rob received his B.A. from Drew University in 1989 and his M.S. in Biology from the University of Cincinnati in 1991. During the day, Rob is a Clinical Scientist in R&D at P&G and is responsible for global clinical trials methodology, design, execution, and evaluation in clinical trials for everything from Rx drugs to consumer products. He has also lectured at outside conferences on clinical trials execution and training. He has experience as a Clinical Investigator, CRA, Project Manager, IRB member, and as a clinical trial subject.

Steven Roschke, PhD

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biology

Dr. Steven Roschke has been teaching biology courses for more than 30 years, starting at a small private college in New York. He moved back to the Midwest after finishing graduate work at Fordham University. Dr. Roschke is the current Department Chair at Good Samaritan College of Nursing where he also teaches Microbiology. He has also taught classes in General Biology, Ecology, and is presently teaching Anatomy & Physiology here at UC Blue Ash. Dr. Roschke is also a member of the American Society for Microbiology.

At home, Steven has two children, both in college; one attends graduate school at Xavier and the other is a student here at UC Blue Ash.

Lynn Rosenblum

Adjunct Instructor and Science Learning Lab Tutor

Lynn teaches the Anatomy and Physiology sequence as an adjunct instructor in the Biology Department.

She has long been interested in the body, first obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, then becoming a licensed massage therapist specializing in pain relief.   Lynn is also a tutor in the Science Learning Lab at UC Blue Ash. In her spare time, she loves hiking in the mountains, and playing with her little schnauzer.

Dr. Robert Thacker is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biology at UC Blue Ash and a post-doctoral fellow at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Division of Molecular Immunology. Dr. Thacker teaches Biology 104 – Life on Earth in an online format.

Dr. Thacker received his B.S. in Microbiology from Brigham Young University and his Ph.D in Pathobiology and Molecular Medicine from the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine. His research during his graduate work and post-doctoral work has focused on the biology of dendritic cells and their role in activating and controlling immune responses.

Wendy Lemen

Biology Lab Manager

Wendy Lemen is the Biology Department Lab Manager.  Wendy received her B.S. degree in Microbiology from Western Illinois University.  Before coming to UC Blue Ash, Wendy worked for the Medical College of Georgia Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics, the University of Iowa, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine conducting research in molecular genetics, pulmonary biology and infectious diseases. 

Wendy is currently the Chair of Staff Council for UC Blue Ash She has two children, Lexi who is an avid horseback rider, and Nicholas who loves any sport involving a ball.  Wendy enjoys spending time with her family.  Wendy is currently taking classes as she works toward completing the course work for the Clinical Research Professional Certificate.

Cara Boeniger

Lab Associate

Cara Boeniger is the Lab Associate for microbiology, biotechnology, genetics, cell structure and function, and medical microbiology classes at UC Blue Ash College since August of 2009. 
Cara received her B.A. in Zoology at Miami University and received a  Biotechnology Certificate at the University of Cincinnati-UC Blue Ash.  Cara is currently taking graduate classes in molecular genetics and immunology at the University of Cincinnati.

Emma Gibbons

Lab Associate

Emma Gibbons is the Lab Associate prepping the General Biology, Fundamentals of Biology, and Biology in the Human Context sequence courses since August 2009 here at UC Blue Ash.

Emma received her BA in English from the University of Cincinnati in 2007. She previously worked in an Infectious Diseases research lab at the University of Cincinnati before coming to UC Blue Ash. Emma is now taking classes working toward her BS in Biology.

Lawrence E. Canterbury, PhD

Dr. Larry Canterbury retired from UC Blue Ash College in 2009 after 30 years of teaching. During his time at UCBA Dr. Canterbury taught Biological Water Sampling and Analysis, Microbiology, General Biology, and Fundamentals of Biology. Dr. Canterbury was an early advocate of multimedia use in all of his courses.   He developed and maintained the Biology Department WebPages.

Dr. Canterbury’s academic and research interests were in aquatic entomology and multimedia technology used in course instruction.

Dr. Canterbury received his Ph.D. from the University of Louisville.

Frank Varga, PhD

Associate Professor Emeritus

Dr. Frank Varga retired from UC Blue Ash in 2007 after 27 years of teaching. During his time at UCBA he taught various microbiology, cell biology and general biology courses. He also advised pending nursing students and served as department chairperson for two years.

His past research interests included work in microbial physiology, membrane physiology, antibiotic sensitivity and resistance, bacterial pathogenesis and clinical test development.

Professor Varga received his BS, MS and PhD in Microbiology from The Ohio State University. After graduation he was a fellow in the Microbiology Department at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA.
